I have decided to add my name to the list of Labour Party contenders for the selection process in the Gorton by-election. The legacy of Sir Gerald Kaufman, a man of integrity and commitment, needs to continue in the capable hands of his Labour comrades.
Over the last several years, I have been an active member of the Labour Party and since 2014 an elected councillor in Moston. For the last 2 years, I have held an assistant executive position presently within Adult Health and wellbeing. It has been a privilege to serve as a Labour councillor representing the existing and developing communities of Manchester.
I have lived in Whalley Range(Gorton CLP) for over 40 years and recognised as being a credible voice for the community. I am a qualified social worker and have worked within the social and welfare sector for over 20 years. I have vast knowledge and experience of working with some of the most vulnerable individuals in our communities, providing emotional, practical support and advocacy.
I am a co- founder and chairperson of a multi award winning, local non for profit organisation. Working with disadvantaged young people and their families across Manchester, to help improve their quality of life and develop resilience. This has been done through the power of sports, educational workshops, training, social activities and mentoring.
I have previously worked for several years, as a service manager for 'Rethink', a national mental health charity. I am a member of the Independent Advisory Group (IAG) with Greater Manchester Police and a board member for the 'Remembering Srebrenica' charity.
I am involved in many initiatives supporting the communities of Manchester, to build bridges and strengthen relationships. I have worked closely with the Peace foundation, ‘Remembering Srebrenica’ charity and MCC in the area of community cohesion, celebrating difference and valuing our commonalities. This has further resulted in me being involved with the Hate Forum at Manchester cathedral and being a representative on panel discussions challenging hate and intolerance.
I have many strong links with all sectors of the community including third sector, local business and public sector. I am regularly asked to provide advice, guidance and support. I have worked on a regular basis with the police, faith groups, and prison service.
I have attended various demonstrations, including standing up against austerity measures, the government cuts on NHS and have been involved with many campaigns. I have supported many groups to raise their voice at various platforms and lobbied ministers across all political parties. I have many years of campaigning experience and raising my voice against injustice, supporting the rights of the oppressed and standing up for peace, at a local, national and international level.
Finally, I believe I have the necessary commitment to develop change, unite and be a strong voice for the communities of Gorton CLP Manchester.
I would like to give my sincere regards to all applicants.
