The Manchester and Trafford Momentum Committee have voted to endorse Yasmine Dar to be Labour parliamentary candidate for Gorton.
The committee believes that more than any other candidate, Cllr Dar can be relied upon to support the policies Momentum members want the Labour Party to carry through. A consistent and vocal supporter of Jeremy Corbyn, and a lifelong campaigner for social justice and equality, Cllr. Dar is a committed socialist and true community representative for the people of Gorton. A UNITE member, social worker and resident of Whalley Range for over 40 years she has the campaigning and political credentials to represent the whole of this diverse constituency.
As a committee, we are recommending that all Labour Party members in Gorton CLP vote for Cllr Dar at the selection meeting.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday 22nd March, 7pm, at the Sheridan Suite, 371 Oldham Rd, Manchester, M40 8RR.
Doors shut at 7pm so be sure to arrive well before and being our party cards and letter you received through the post with your declaration of identity letter.
Here's an extract from Yasmine's statement.
"Over the last several years, I have been an active member of the Labour Party and since 2014 an elected councillor in Moston. For the last 2 years, I have held an assistant executive position presently within Adult Health and wellbeing. It has been a privilege to serve as a Labour councillor representing the existing and developing communities of Manchester.
I have lived in Whalley Range(Gorton CLP) for over 40 years and recognised as being a credible voice for the community. I am a qualified social worker and have worked within the social and welfare sector for over 20 years. I have vast knowledge and experience of working with some of the most vulnerable individuals in our communities, providing emotional, practical support and advocacy.
I am a co- founder and chairperson of a multi award winning, local non for profit organisation. Working with disadvantaged young people and their families across Manchester, to help improve their quality of life and develop resilience. This has been done through the power of sports, educational workshops, training, social activities and mentoring.
I have attended various demonstrations, including standing up against austerity measures, the government cuts on NHS and have been involved with many campaigns. I have supported many groups to raise their voice at various platforms and lobbied ministers across all political parties. I have many years of campaigning experience and raising my voice against injustice, supporting the rights of the oppressed and standing up for peace, at a local, national and international level."
