Where do we stand in Gorton?

This is a quick piece to update you on the state of the race in Gorton for the Labour Party selection. Applications have closed and I understand that about 60 people have applied. I understand all the main frontrunners have applied but Tony Lloyd hasn’t. Longlisting is on Friday.

At the moment the real game is who gets on the shortlist. Ferocious behind the scenes positioning is going on, with rumour and counter rumour circulating into my text message inbox on an hourly basis.

The shortlisting panel consists of Keith Vaz MP, Glenis Willmott MEP, Shabana Mahmood MP, Andi Fox of the TSSA and Claudia Webbe of the Grassroots Alliance.

Glenis Willmott and Shabana Mahmood are likely to favour candidates opposed to Jeremy Corbyn.

Andi Fox and Claudia Webbe are likely to support candidates more friendly to Jeremy.

Mr Vaz will be the deciding vote. Mr Vaz is notorious in the Labour Party for being a wheeler-dealer and making behind the scenes deal. I’ve been told completely opposing views on what Mr Vaz will do. It appears he is trying to make all sides happy which of course in reality is unlikely to be a successful strategy.

Local members in Manchester Gorton have been in touch with me to accuse Councillor Julie Reid, in a post for this site, of copying Sam Wheeler's Facebook launch statement.

A local member sent me the following graphic.

Momentum activist Sam Wheeler confirmed that he is running in Manchester Gorton last night in a statement posted on Facebook, amid intense local efforts to keep him off the shortlist.

One local Councillor told me, “It’s clear that the winner should be Julie Reid, Luthfur Rahman, Rabnawaz Akbar, Afzal Khan or Mike Amesbury”.

As I wrote on Friday, some local activists are bitterly resisting Mr Wheeler, including some elements of Momentum. Karen Broady, a Momentum activist based in Levenshulme, has been attacking Wheeler on Twitter. A smear campaign against Mr Wheeler has also appeared.

Things get vicious in Gorton as smear campaign against Sam Wheeler appears

In the previous week a group of Labour members in Manchester Gorton, have engaged in vicious internet smear attacks on journalists & rival candidates. These attacks are linked to friends of Councillor Rabnawaz Akbar and in some cases Mr Akbar himself.  A group called “The Levy Massive” on Facebook is the centre of many of these attacks.

Karen Broady, an associate of Mr Akbar according to multiple sources, has spent the morning attacking Mr Wheeler on Twitter. Mr Wheeler's spokesman described the smears as "nonsense".

The CWU & GMB have formally announced that they are supporting Afzal MEP in Labour's selection for Manchester Gorton.

Neil Smith, GMB's North West Regional Political Officer, said, “Afzal is a proud trade unionist. He has been an advocate for working people his whole career, fighting for workers’ rights, equality and against fascism. Who is going to be the Labour Candidate in Gorton?

This article is one of a series as part of WriteYou's coverage of Manchester Gorton, you can see the coverage here. Help WriteYou grow by supporting our powerful platform for independent fearless non partisan journalism here.

The situation in Gorton is changing rapidly but Afzal Khan remains the clear favourite to win. Applications are now open and are closing on Monday 13th March. Shortlisting will be on Monday 20th March with the final selection on Wednesday 22nd March. The shortlisting panel is Keith Vaz, Glenis Willmott, Claudia Webbe, Andi Fox and Shabana Mahmood.

My sources on Labour’s NEC say that it’s likely that there will be a shortlist of 4. This means it has to be gendered balanced.

Based on what I’ve been told there will be 1 white male place, 1 BAME male place, 1 white female place and 1 BAME female place.

Afzal Khan is almost certain to be on the shortlist. Rabnawaz Akbar and Luthfur Rahman have yet to say publicly whether they are running or not and the Khan juggernaut is already picking up momentum. He will definitely pick up the CWU nomination and will almost certainly pick up the GMB nomination. Unite are having a hustings for their candidate at their Salford office on Thursday. Unite will decide after this and as it stands they are likely to go for Sam Wheeler. You can see Khan’s announcement statement here.

Either Sam Wheeler or Councillor Mike Amesbury will get a place on the shortlist. Tony Lloyd is rumoured to be running, but I think it’s doubtful he will actually run in the end. Sam Wheeler is heavily supported by Momentum but with the unions split between candidates, it’ll be interesting to see whether Wheeler can force himself onto the shortlist. What Andi Fox, the TSSA NEC member, does will be critical giving the small TSSA a huge say in the vote. Amesbury has close links with Angela Rayner but Wheeler’s strong support from Momentum puts him in an advantageous position. Amesbury also has a strong claim to be on the shortlist as a local candidate.

4 Lessons from Ian Warren's YouGov Poll of Labour Members

Ian Warren, the polling expert, has commissioned YouGov to poll Labour Party members. It is YouGov’s first poll since last year of Labour Party members.

The poll makes very interesting reading and shows a significant shift in the views of Labour members. I was alerted that there was a poll in the field last week and anecdotally I suspected that the results would be very similar to what we’ve seen.
