Huffington Post's Paul Waugh blasts Labour's Debbie Abrahams

Huffington Post Political Editor Paul Waugh has tweeted an incredible rant about a member of the Labour Shadow Cabinet and their Political Advisor (PAD). Waugh is complaining that the Shad Cab member took his story and gave it to another outlet.

Multiple sources high level sources including another member of the Shadow Cabinet have pointed the figure at Debbie Abrahams and her Political Advisor. I spoke with her PAD last night who didn't deny the story and has since not replied to any texts or phone calls. A Spokesman for Jeremy Corbyn declined to comment when I put to him that it was Abrahams and the PAD.

I didn't run the story last night as I wanted to be sure my information was accurate.

The Guardian subsequently published this article featuring Abrahams.

Part of the reason for publishing this article is the experience I have had with WriteYou. We run significant original content due to my deep and wide ranging connections in the Labour Party and have a rapidly growing readership. I've worked incredibly hard to get the site to where it is.

On many occasions I will pitch an idea to someone and find it in another news outlet. Other outlets regularly take our work without crediting it. The Manchester Evening News for example ripped off whole quotes without naming us. Rowena Mason, the journalist who is one 2 named in the Guardian piece, also ran a piece that ripped off whole quotes from WriteYou without crediting us in August last year.

I've seen a number of people criticising Paul Waugh on my Facebook this morning. This really misses the point.

The point is about trust. A huge amount of work goes into creating content and it's deeply frustrating when it's used by someone else without credit. Debbie Abrahams has now made an enemy of Paul Waugh, one of Britain's most respected journalists, completely unnecessarily.

It's not a conspiracy, it's simply just bad people management.

Here is the first of Waugh's 19 tweets.

Will Labour win Manchester Gorton?

Now the dust has settled and Labour has named their candidate, Afzal Khan MEP, who is going to win Manchester Gorton?

Labour is going to win, probably with a reduced majority, but still by quite some distance. Here is why.

The Manchester Evening News’s Chief Political Reporter, Jennifer Williams, was busy tweeting on Sunday that there have been negative stories from the campaign trail. She said, “Unhappy anecdotes floating back from the Lab campaign trail in Gorton. There are far too many undecideds, according to 3 different sources”. In another tweet she said, “Brexit a 'massive issue' according to one. In white working class areas people 'not voting or not answering the door' says another”.

I’ve worked on over a dozen by-elections for the Labour Party including being Labour Leader Ed Miliband’s representative at 2 of them. I also founded a company that spoke to millions of voters on the telephone and signed up 1 in 4 of all people who voted in the 2015 Labour Leadership election. I was also the Labour Party Organiser in Withington in 2010 where we achieved the smallest swing away from Labour against the Lib Dems in the UK.

So I have the credentials to be very sceptical to Williams’s tweets. This is not meant as a criticism of her and her conclusions are correct, but she doesn’t have the campaign knowledge to filter the steaming pile of nonsense she is being briefed.

Manchester Labour removes high profile Councillor Amina Lone from panel but put Momentum’s Sam Wheeler on

Due to boundary changes in Manchester next year there will be all out elections for Manchester City Council. This means that all councillors are up for election.

For the Labour Party this means anyone who wants to be a candidate has to apply to the panel of local candidates. This includes existing Councillors.

Only those approved can go forward for selection in June and July this year. The selections are going to be hotly contested, as there are a number of displaced candidates such as Julie Reid in Gorton South.

I understand that Hulme Councillor Amina Lone, who was shortlisted for the Manchester Gorton By-Election, is the only sitting Councillor to have been rejected from the panel. This is yet another Manchester exclusive that was broken by WriteYou. She is likely to appeal. Lone has a high profile nationally and was a parliamentary candidate for a marginal seat in 2015. It is believed she was removed due to concerns about her lack of activity in the ward.

Burnley Councillor Wajid Khan set to replace Afzal Khan as MEP for the North West

If Afzal Khan MEP wins the Manchester Gorton by-election he will stand down as an MEP.

This means that the fourth person on Labour’s list from the 2014 European Parliament election will become an MEP. That person is Burnley Councillor Wajid Khan.

In an exclusive interview with WriteYou, Mr Khan confirmed that he would take up the position saying that, “It would be an honor and a privilege to serve the people of the North West”.

Mr Khan is likely to be one of the last, if not the last, British person to become an MEP. Born and bred in Burnley, his dad was a taxi driver and his mum didn’t work.

Last night Afzal Khan MEP, as I predicted, was named as the Labour candidate in Manchester Gorton. It’s difficult to see anyone other than him becoming the next MP when the by-election takes place. Mr Khan will be utterly elated having had the ambition to be an MP for many years.

There are a few interesting takeaways from his victory.

1.    Having union support does matter

Afzal Khan secured the support in the end of all the major unions. This really does make a difference, not just on the results but also on the support available to the candidates. Mr Khan for example was widely credited with giving the best speech last night. This wasn’t an accident.

He has received intense coaching by the GMB union. I understand one of their Political Officers, Tom Warnett, was at the hustings last night. Mr Warnett is very much a behind the scenes operator but played a critical role in mobilising Unite the Union's membership in Ed Miliband’s 2010 Leadership victory. Mr Warnett is very effective and really well regarded for his work.

I understand Mr Warnett had been assisting Khan with his hustings preparation. Khan isn’t noted for his speaking ability and this was something that many of his supporters were worried about.

Union support also matters when it comes to the politics. Despite attempts by Jeremy Corbyn’s office to keep Khan off the shortlist, it proved impossible due to his union support. Glenis Willmott for example is involved with the GMB and I understand they lobbied her hard for Mr Khan’s inclusion.

Sam Wheeler, who initially received Unite support, was only on the longlist due to the personal intervention of Unite’s political director Anneliese Midgley.

Tommy Robinson is absolute scum

I've spent nearly 15 years working around the UK Parliament. Many of friends and family work around the area. I've spent the afternoon frantically trying to make sure everyone is ok, deeply worried and upset about the attack on somewhere I know so well and a bridge, until I moved to New York, I walked over almost every day.

To then see far right leader Tommy Robinson actually turn up at Parliament whilst people are dying, to blame muslims for this atrocity is absolutely disgraceful. To use such barbarity to call for an entire religion to be banned from the UK, stokes every fibre of rage in my bones.

Now is the time for unity, not division. Resolve, not blame. Hope, not fear.

I didn't see Tommy Robinson blaming every white christian when Thomas Mair shot dead a Labour MP.

He may be consumed with hatred, but the hatred that he shows, is the hatred that the terrorists want to consume every person in Britain. That's when they win, when we are terrorised.

Tommy Robinson is absolutely everything that Britain stands against and every right minded person should stand up and condemn him as the absolute scum that he is.

Rabnawaz Akbar describes homosexuality as a "lifestyle choice"

I have been passed the below Facebook post by concerned Manchester Gorton members. In it Councillor Rabnawaz Akbar says that homosexuality is a lifestyle choice. Sources say he has made the same comments on several occasions.

One of the sources who passed me this information said, "It is in the public interest for this to come out given the crucial role Rabnawaz is playing in the Manchester Gorton selection. It's a disgraceful thing to say".

Another Labour source said, "Homosexuality is not a lifestyle choice and it's offensive for Rabnawaz to even suggest it. He should apologise to LGBT people, including many in his own Party who campaign alongside him against intolerance and for equality. This kind of language is plain wrong and Councillor Akbar should be ashamed".

A Labour Councillor in Manchester told me, "This could be why he was kept off the shortlist".

Councillor Akbar was one of the candidates longlisted for Manchester Gorton but he didn't make the shortlist.

Akbar didn't reply to my request for a comment.

*After publishing this article Mr Akbar wrote two posts on Facebook attacking me saying that I accused him of being a homophobe and a misogynist bully. I have done no such thing and if Mr Akbar can find evidence of being doing this, I'm happy to issue a correction. The reason the coverage seems skewed against Mr Akbar is because he refuses to engage with me. I talk to many Manchester Councillors every day, but he refuses. Mr Akbar is welcome to contribute to the site.

Afzal Khan MEP today secured the support of Unite the Union and UNISON in his bid to be Labour candidate in Manchester Gorton. That means he now has the support of all of the biggest Labour supporting unions. As well as Unite and UNISON he also has the support of USDAW, GMB, CWU and Aslef. This makes him the clear union choice for Gorton and gives him a big boost going into the hustings meeting tomorrow.

Khan favourite in Manchester Gorton, as Labour Party HQ panics about Yasmine Dar

Following yesterday’s shortlisting, Afzal Khan MEP is the clear frontrunner to win tomorrow’s Labour Party selection in Manchester Gorton. I have a clear rationale for this that I will outline.

Politics in Gorton, is far from simple but I will try and give a basic guide here. Currently there are about 2,000 members who can vote in the selection.

There are 7 wards Fallowfield, Whalley Range, Rusholme, Levenshulme, Longsight, Gorton North and Gorton South.

Whalley Range is by far the biggest ward in terms of members and contains left wing liberals and a substantial Asian membership. Fallowfield is a mixture of white working class and students. Rusholme is predominantly Pakistani with some students. Levenshulme is liberal intelligentsia. Longsight has a large Bangladeshi community as well as Pakistani. Gorton North and South are white working class.
