Election musings

12:40am: Brighton Kemptown likely to be won by Labour according to sources on the ground.

12:15am: I had decided not to do a live blog of today's General Election, but the evening events are so extraordinary I can't resist. So here is WriteYou the Social Newspaper's impromptu election blog. For new readers, there is a heavy focus on events from a Labour Party perspective in my own articles.

Here is my exclusive on Alex Sobel being ahead in Leeds North West

Former Manchester Central MP and Greater Manchester Police Commissioner Tony Lloyd has been confirmed as Labour's candidate in Rochdale.

I exclusively broke the news that Tony Lloyd was the front runner.

Katy Clark, Jeremy Corbyn's Political Secretary, pulled out of the selection as it became clear that once again opponents of Jeremy Corbyn had ensured the selection panel was unfriendly to her.

The Labour NEC has met and agreed the list of candidates for the 2017 General Election including banning Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk from standing. I have been passed a copy of the full list.

The prime safe seats were carved up in a deal between the main unions with candidates such as Stephanie Peacock in Barnsley East and Laura Pidcock in Durham North West now looking certain to be MPs.

Over a dozen senior Labour Party and union sources and a member of the Shadow Cabinet have confirmed to me that former Chair of the PLP and Greater Manchester Police Commissioner Tony Lloyd is running for the Labour Party selection in Rochdale. The seat is open due to current MP Simon Danczuk being banned by the Labour Party from standing as a Labour candidate.

I’ve contacted Mr Lloyd for a comment but I haven’t been able to get in touch with him so far.

A senior Labour source said, “Tony is going for it and intends to win”.

In recent days I’ve had a lot of people asking me why I haven’t written about the Labour Party selection process. That’s because a number of my friends are running for seats and I haven’t wanted to interfere in the process or be accused of being biased.

However Paul Waugh at Huffpo, Kevin Schofield at PoliticsHome and many other outlets have written about the situation in detail.

I knew most of this information but chose not to publish it.

Tonight it was announced the GMBs Stephanie Peacock has won Barnsley East, Nottingham Councillor Alex Norris has won Nottingham North, ex-NEC member Ellie has won Lewisham West and Councillor Emma Hardy has won Hull West and Hessle.

My phone battery reduced by 80% in 30 minutes as I was besieged with briefing and counter briefing by different sides.

In the last few days significant behind the scenes maneuvering has been going on to decide who will win each seat.

I have been passed a copy of the official list of Labour MPs standing down that has been sent to Labour's NEC.

Steve Rotheram, who by text told me yesterday he was unlikely to stand, is now in fact standing. Certainly Joe Anderson's decision to run must certainly have played a big factor in Steve's decision making process.

Here is the full list with updated article on runners and riders to come.
