Proud to receive the support of UNISON

Proud to get the unanimous nomination of my union, UNISON at the North West Labourlink meeting this weekend. In the past I was honoured to be elected and serve as both a shop steward and convenor for members working in the careers services in Manchester, Salford, Tameside and Trafford. With more than 1.3 million members, UNISON is one of the UK’s largest trade unions and Europe’s largest public service union.

I'm running for my home seat

This article is one of a series as part of WriteYou's coverage of Manchester Gorton, you can see the coverage here. Help WriteYou grow by supporting our powerful platform for independent fearless non partisan journalism here.

After taking soundings from local Labour members, family, colleagues, constituents, Trade Unions and friends I have decided to put my name forward to be the Parliamentary Labour Party Candidate for my home constituency of Manchester Gorton.

This constituency is my home. I was born and work here in Manchester, my young son goes to school here and have been proud to represent this area as a Labour Councillor for more than a decade. I have a strong track record of getting things done locally, securing investment and much-needed new facilities throughout the city. As a careers advisor in the local community, I have helped get unemployed young people into work, training and education. As a Labour campaigner, I have brought our Labour family together to win public support for the Party. On the national stage, I worked with Angela Rayner, our Shadow Secretary of State to develop the 'Education - not Segregation' campaign. And more recently I have been working with Andy Burnham on his campaign to become the first elected Mayor for Greater Manchester. I know I can provide the strong Mancunian voice which Gorton needs now, more than ever, to get things done

Whoever wins the Labour nomination must build on Gerald's legacy of unstinting service to the local community and help bring the decent jobs, housing, skills and health service that our people deserve.

I wish the other candidates all the best and I know we will march forward as a united Manchester Gorton Labour family.

I will put out more information and updates in the coming days, if you want to help me with my campaign please email me at mike.amesbury1@gmail.com
