Due to boundary changes in Manchester next year there will be all out elections for Manchester City Council. This means that all councillors are up for election.

For the Labour Party this means anyone who wants to be a candidate has to apply to the panel of local candidates. This includes existing Councillors.

Only those approved can go forward for selection in June and July this year. The selections are going to be hotly contested, as there are a number of displaced candidates such as Julie Reid in Gorton South.

I understand that Hulme Councillor Amina Lone, who was shortlisted for the Manchester Gorton By-Election, is the only sitting Councillor to have been rejected from the panel. This is yet another Manchester exclusive that was broken by WriteYou. She is likely to appeal. Lone has a high profile nationally and was a parliamentary candidate for a marginal seat in 2015. It is believed she was removed due to concerns about her lack of activity in the ward.

Several Councillors such as Kevin Peel are standing down from the Council. Local sources say Peel went before he was pushed, due to his outspoken behavior on social media. The highly respected Andrew Fender is also retiring.

In a curious twist Momentum’s Sam Wheeler has made the panel of Councillors. This is pretty ironic given he wasn’t shortlisted for Manchester Gorton, yet Amina Lone who was shortlisted hasn’t made the Council panel.

I spoke with Mr Wheeler and he replied, “Onwards and upwards”. He confirmed to me he is actively seeking Council selection and is considering his next moves.

Based on my conversations with Manchester political figures Mr Wheeler is likely to be ferociously opposed due to his Momentum links and the animosity created by his campaign during the Manchester Gorton By-Election selection.

Following the news, exclusively broken by WriteYou, that will be a By-Election in Rusholme ward I understand that the shortlisting is taking place tonight. The full selection is taking place on Friday.

Amina Lone and Labour North West were approached for comment and did not reply.
