With its vote for Brexit, Britain is at a moment of crisis. We can negotiate a socially just exit from the EU that safeguards much of our economy but it is far from certain. The leadership battles in the Conservative Party and the prospect of the government shifting even further to the right makes this challenge especially difficult.
At a time like this, the electorate quite rightly would not stand for the Labour Party to be talking about itself, not the challenges facing the country, by having an unnecessary leadership election. Now is a time for unity.
That's why Momentum has launched a petition calling for Labour Party unity. We must redouble our efforts to stop migrant scapegoating, focus our attention on the needs and desires of the overwhelming majority, and offer a real programme of hope for our people.
