The CWU & GMB have formally announced that they are supporting Afzal MEP in Labour's selection for Manchester Gorton.
Neil Smith, GMB's North West Regional Political Officer, said, “Afzal is a proud trade unionist. He has been an advocate for working people his whole career, fighting for workers’ rights, equality and against fascism. I believe Afzal has the experience, skills and passion to be fantastic MP for the people of Gorton and that he has the full support of the GMB trade Union.”
Dave Ward, General Secretary of the CWU, said, “Afzal has been a strong voice for the people of Manchester for many years in his work as a local councillor, Lord Mayor and as a local MEP. He has a track record fighting for workers’ rights, equality and social justice. He has an incredible passion to improve the lives of his constituents and would make an excellent Member of Parliament for the people of Gorton. CWU are proud to support him for Manchester Gorton.”
Afzal Khan said, “I’m delighted that the GMB and CWU have announced they will be supporting my campaign to be Labour’s candidate in the Gorton by-election".
This announcement creates more momentum for Mr Khan's growing campaign. It also means that he will be entitled to support from the GMB & CWU political operations. GMB have recently hired Tom Warnett from Unite the Union to work on their Labour side and he is a well respected operator.
It also means Khan will have their support lobbying for him to be on the shortlist.
